Che Chen is a sound and graphic artist based in Brooklyn and Stonybrook, New York. As a solo performer, Che uses stringed, wind, reed and percussion instruments, reel to reel tape machines, oscillators and other musical and “non-musical” objects in works that explore his interests in perceptual phenomena and global folk music traditions. Che’s performances often utilize acoustic and electronic sound sources placed in various locations around the performance area in order to explore the phenomena of difference tones (closely tuned pitches that result in beating patterns), phasing, repetition, decay, the spacialisation of sounds, and the structural relationship between “audience” and “performer.” Recent solo recordings have been explorations of idiosyncratic tunings for the violin that are intended to be played by bowing harmonics. Che also plays in a duo with multi-instrumentalist, Robbie Lee, in Jozef Van Wissem’s Heresy of the Free Spirit—a trio that plays arrangements of Van Wissem’s lute pieces as well as free improvisations—and in True Primes, his duo with singer/percussionist, Rolyn Hu. As an anthologist, he has produced the private press artists’ magazine, O Sirhan, O Sirhan, a publication inspired by Wallace Berman’s Semina, Aspen Journal and the Fluxus design work of George Maciunas, and Attention Patterns, a 2 LP + booklet set featuring Pauline Oliveros, Eliane Radigue, Yoshi Wada and Sun Circle.
Che has shared bills with Sir Richard Bishop, Paul Metzger, Susan Alcorn, Jozef Van Wissem, Mountains, Maria Chavez, Elodie Lauten, Mouthus, Sightings, R.Keenan Lawler, Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Mike Wexler, Daniel Carter, Jeff Shurdut, among others.
